I have a system HP Vectra system running Windows 2000
that won't boot anymore...

Upon boot I see the following error:

A disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Atl+Del to restart

The system was working find up to this point. Is this
some indication of a disk failure or an OS issue? What
are the recommended diagnostics for this?

Download a diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site to test
the integrity of your drive.

This usually means that the controller isn't mapping the drive
geometry correctly or it's changed. Check CMOS
and/or the controller BIOS.

If that's OK, then you can boot from the CD and
from the recovery console rewrite the boot block
using fixboot and fixmbr. Do NOT do this until
you are sure that the controller/BIOS setup is
correct.

You can also try a repair install from the
CD. Again, only if you are sure the drive is
being mapped as it was before.
