First, I just added an account for this server to access
these groups. I'm not really familiar with MS.private
groups, but it appears they are not accessible outside
a newsreader? Like via a google search?

Of course, I just did an immediate "catch up", thinking
I would just google search for the information I need-
ed. And now, I see they don't appear searchable via
google, so all the threads are gone.

I guess I can reset all the groups to unread, but I need
to understand where I'm right, and where I'm wrong,
first.

Thanks,

Gary

Hello Gary,

For these groups, use the following information.
Viewing these Newsgroups with an NNTP Newsreader

Since these are private newsgroups, your server will require you to
logon using the following information:

a.. Server: privatenews.microsoft.com
b.. Account name: privatenews\spyware
c.. Password: spyware
d.. Note that the password is case-sensitive.
Viewing these Newsgroups through Outlook Express

1.. Launch Outlook Express
2.. Select Tools - Accounts
3.. Select Add & click News
4.. Enter Your Name
5.. Enter an alias (you may want to consider avoiding posting with
your real e-mail alias, as these newsgroups are exposed publicly through the
web interface. More about e-mail aliases and privacy.)
6.. Internet News Server Name Page - enter privatenews.microsoft.com
and check "My news server requires me to log on". Click "Next".
7.. Enter Account name - privatenews\spyware
8.. Enter password (case-sensitive): spyware
9.. Click Next & Finish
10.. Close and download the newsgroups.
Before joining in, be sure to check our Privacy Statement and Rules of
Conduct.

Thanks Engel.... Yeah, I did all that, except changing my
name. I posted the original from my OE newseader. Just
as I am posting this from that earlier defined account.

I got all the information from a MS page that detailed the
exact information you provided. And, I did learn after my
post that there was a web interface from that page to view the threads from
the privatenews server.

As I said, I'm a rookie when it comes to MS.private
groups. Are they excluded from google view?

Additionally, I camr here because I had a defender ques-
tion, but I've since resolved that issue.

Thanks again, for the help.

Gary

The private groups require a password to read. This effectively prevents
their being indexed by Google, I suspect.

We've expected that at some point after the beta phase of this project
ended, these groups would become public. They certainly should be.
However, whatever is going to replace them has not yet materialized.

There is a single british web forum which slurps much of the content from
these groups and which is indexed by Google, I believe. Also, the web
version of these forums has a search mechanism.

Thanks Bill.... This is my first exposure to a private group.
