A Common Outlook 2007 Contacts and Vista Mail Addressbook Contacts

I use both Outllok 2007 and Vista Mail on Vista but am unable to determine
how I can share the Outlook Contacts with Mail? I was able to do this fairly
easily on WinXP and earlier versions of Outlook.

Is there a way to do this that doesn't require me to continually synchronize
one with the other, i.e., for them both to use a common Contacts file?

No. Outlook has not been able to share with the Windows Address Book since
Outlook 2000 IMO mode.

Apologize for previous empty response - hit the wrong button.

One approach to Outlook contacts with Vista Mail would be to "export"
Outlook contacts to a CSV file and import them into Vista mail.

Purely from a personal curiousity standpoint, may I ask why on earth would
you (or anyone) want to use Vista Mail if you also have Outlook '2007 and
thereby impose the need to maintain contact lists in 2 email clients?

Yes, but this method would require that I periodically synchronize the Vista
Mail contacts as I update my Outlook contacts, something I was hoping to
avoid.

Well, until I upgraded to Outlook 2007, from Outlook 2000, (along with
Office 2007 and Vista), I didn't need to maintain 2 contacts list, I was able
to use Outlooks contacts list within Outlook Express.

Another "got ya!" item I'm now finding is that Outlook 2007 decided to throw
out all that wonderful standards work that went into IE7 and instead switch
to the much hampered Word 2007 renderer. Now all of my HTML email looks
gawd-awful. Whereas, Vista Mail still uses (correctly to my way of thinking)
the IE engine.
 
Thks for the response. Excluding the HTML rendering issue, still don't
understand why you would want to maintain the primary contact list outside
of Outlook when Outlook is a fully self-contained email client (whether your
environment was/is "O'2000 & OE" or "O'2007 & Vista Mail"). The
benefit/purpose of that completely escapes me but I guess you have your
reason(s) that go beyond migrating completely from OE to Outlook '2000 many
years ago.

Will ask the question another way, on your original system (O'2000 & OE) -
in which program was the original contact info entered (OE or Outlook)? What
was/were the reason(s) and benefit(s) in using a common contact list in both
of these programs on the same machine on an on-going basis? That's the part
I have trouble understanding from an operational standpoint - not whether
you could do it or not.

Hi Karl, I used OE (now Vista Mail) for my Personal email and Outlook for
Professional communications. Vista Mail (VM) affords better mail handling
capabilities in many ways.

There are a variety of reasons why I prefer using both email clients but
here is just one. At times I received mail that I want to save but where the
Subject text is not very descriptive. With VM, I can DnD the mail item to the
desktop, edit *.eml file with a Plain Old Text Editor (POTE) to change the
Subject text to something more meaningful and then DnD the revised desktop
version back into VM and then delete the original. Now, when I save it and do
a search for it later, I'm much more likely to find it than before. This
can't be done with Outlook's *.msg format, nor would I want it to be since my
business communications need to retain originality.

The original Contacts were entered in Outlook, which OE then picked up. As
to why I would want to have both programs share the same Contacts list, it's
really a matter of minimizing the potential errors wrought with redundancy.
In my case, many of the people I communicate with on a personal basis, I also
communicate on a professional basis. Thus, having to maintain two Contacts
lists increases the chances of having individual contacts getting out of sync
over time. The ability to share one Contacts list eliminated that concern.

Thanks for the explanation - as long as it works for you for what you need,
all that counts.

Just a side note purely as a FYI - with Outlook all you need to do is open a
given message, "edit it" in place which will allow you to change the Subject
and just "save" without the steps you're currently following - much less
cumbersome (In O'2007 - "Message Tab" --> Other Actions --> Edit Message).

As for business & personal - if you use different POP3 accounts for your
email, also really simple to keep all inbound messages separate within
Outlook for both reading and filing as long as you remember to use the right
email account for sending of messages (just sort the messages by email
account as the top level criteria followed by whatever else serves your
needs).

Anyhow - as originally mentioned - question was just for personal
curiousity - no more - no less.

Thanks for the tip on editing the Subject in Outlook. I'll play a bit more
with it to see if I can safely use Outlook as the only email client.

Hey gang

Thanks for this thread. I had exactly the same question for much the same
reason.

In fact, I had all 4 of my private accounts plus professional 1 on Outlook
2007, but wanted to move the personal ones to a different email client so I
could just check that once a day and not be distracted during work with
personal emails.

I would have just assumed that Outlook could use the Microsoft Contacts as
its address book... heck, I just dragged all my Outlook contacts to MS
Contacts and that worked fine and Vista Mail can see them... very
disappointing.

I think I'll just maintain both for a while... clobber the MS Contacts one
once a week or so...
