A challenge for programmers

I have a conflict with the RoadRunner and my Ethernet cards. I had two in
use. Had to disable one or the RoadRunner wouldn't work.

The installer said no problem. Just pick up a hub and use the only one
card. I did today and the hub and RoadRunner works just fine. The problem
is neither computer will see each other. I've tried static IP's and auto
IP's and everything I can think of but it just ain't working. I changed the
crossover cord to straight through. I have disabled all the virus guards
and firewalls thinking that was the problem to no avail.

This machine is an XP pro and the other is Win98se. Any ideas short of a
sledge hammer to get them talking to each other again?

My challenge. Write a program that will go in and read all the components
in all computers (with windows) and set up the network, hands off to the
operator. The stuff that comes on the Win discs just doesn't work.

I assume that you have enabled sharing on them and rebooted them
endless times. Start by getting each one to ping itself first.
Anyway you will probably get better responses in a more suitable group
than alt.freeware.
Start with alt.windows-xp
You'll get it if you hold off on the hammer.

Yes, I have done all these things. For 2 days!! The first three paragraphs
were just explaining what I wanted a program to do and was what I posted to
the MS forums.

I wasn't hoping to find an answer through freeware, (not sure there is one)
just a program that does it by itself.

Glenn PS: MS networking forums, so far have ignored the question, they know
their system for networking stinks.

Dontja just love the pile of dung MS has created with this one. A couple
of things that my experience has taught me shouldn't make a difference
but it does sometimes. Make sure both workgroup names are not only the
same but use only letters and numbers, no spaces or dashes. I have no
idea why this made a difference but it did for me. Another, make sure
the cabling is good, even brand new cables can come out bad. Make sure
you don't have one of the machines plugged into the uplink port of the
hub, seen this one cause difficulty, but only on some hubs. After having
run up and down the stairs many times, lost some weight that episode, I
finally put the machines side by side so that I could work on them at
the same time. I can help to be able to look at screens together and
make comparisons. Probably the first thing to do though is to uninstall
anything RoadRunner has installed, and try to get your LAN up first,
then go after internet access.
Good luck

FYI

If anyone needs a router, I got one at Micro-teck for $15.00 after rebates
and for the first time, my two computers are fully integrated.
