is there a way to turn off the automatically generated folders (_vti_cnf)
that frontpage 2000 creates in your site. it is causing red x's to show up
in my site due to the way we have it set up. also could there be something
on the server side that needs to be removed or turned off in order to
prevent these folders from being generated?

Those files are part of the FP server extensions. Are the extensions being
used on the host server? If so, those files are required.

No, they do not cause red x's to show. Something else is.
To not have them on a Server, remove FP extensions from the Server.
That will ofcourse mean that you no longer will be able to use any
features in FP that requires the Extensions.

When I removed the _vti_cnf folders the red X's are gone and my site is back
to normal. My site does not use anything that requires FP extensions as
well as my company does not support them since it causes loop holes on their
server.

You can not remove the _vti folder from your local machine copy or FP will not be able to manage
your site content nor will it be a FP web / site.

If the live/remote server doesn't have the FP extensions, then they are not need on the live/remote
server. When you publish via File Menu | Publish Web/Site the _vti folders are never published
between servers, they are created by the FP extensions on the server, so if there are no FP
extensions, then they are not created. The only way they get on a live/remote server that doesn't
have the FP extensions, is for the user to upload them in some manner.

If you are working directly on the server via FP via a File Path, then you are working with a
Disk-based web, and the _vti folders are created because the FP client needs them to manage your
content. If you don't want the _vti folder, then you can't use FP.

I think you have answered my question. My situation is pretty different
than most. I created this website using FP but then we modified it so that
I do not publish anymore but just open and save the html and asp files
directly from the server. The site does not need any function that FP has
to offer as far as extensions go. The server most have somehow had the
extensions reinstalled, because this same exact issues occured when we
first put the site on this new server and it had the FP extensions on it.
So what we did was removed the extensions from the server and the vti_cnf
folders from the site. I have notified our server admin to verify that the
FP extensions are not installed and if so to remove them. I think it is a
possiblity that when I made updates to the site at one point that I
accidentally opened the folder as a web page and FP installed the
extensions, because normally I would only do a file / open and open one page
at time not allowing FP to turn the folder into a web folder. If this is
the case do you know what action(s) I need to take to correct this?

There is no way to stop FP from adding the _vti folders if the web/site is opened in FP. However the
_vti folders should not have any impact on images being displayed, so I think you have other issues.

The FP extensions without using any of the run-time features (forms, hit counter, etc.) allow you to
work (create/edit) directly on the live/remote server, recalculate hyperlinks, etc. FP's strong
point, is it ability to manage site content.

I'm really confused now because I have opened individual pages from the site
on the server and FP never added the vti_cnf folders before once I removed
them from the first time and only time I published.

Lauren appears to be opening the page via the drive letter, not http.
