I have set up a Windows 2003 Active directory indegrated Domain Controller.
I set up DNS, I created a forward lookup zone, the zone _msdcs was also
created, automatically is this ok, It seems to have all the records as
a normal zone SOA, NS plus the srv records for gc, pdc etc.

Also is it a good idea setting up a notifiers list for this Zone.

The automatic creation of the _msdcs.<forest>.<root> is expected and
desirable behavior. Assuming the delegation is present within the
<forest>.<root> zone that you manually created, everything will be
function normally.

I'm uncertain, within the context of the Windows Server 2003 DNS
service, what you're referring to by "notifiers list for this Zone" ...
please elaborate.

Oh dear, I do hope my former English teacher isn't interested in
Microsoft DNS. Remove the "be" or append an "ing" ... either approach
will satisfy my need for (at least close to) grammatical accuracy.

:(

A slip of the keyboard or a slip of the mind?

Hey Ace,

Sadly, a slip of the mind ... writing the same sentence in two ways at
the same time :)

Hope you're well!

If you right click the zone properties (any zone) and click on the
Zone Transfer
tab then the notify button you can add IP Addresses here of secondary
servers
you only want to receive zone transfers. Is this a recommended thing
to do for
the new windows 2003 zone _msdcs. Or should I not touch the zone
properties of this zone.

Recently we had some problems withour domain and I'm sorry to say that we called in a "professional" that said that this zone was our problem. So he went ahead and deleted it. We are running wink 2k3 enterprise editio. Now come to find out i need this zone to add a secondary domain controller.... NOW WhAT. is thier a way to restore this or completely re-create it manually or am I simply out of luck. and I am moderatly knowledgable when it comes to domains and active directory
