98SE & XP home

Jacqueline

I've been trying to network 2 pc's; one running win 98SE (machine B), the
other XP home (machine A), using a Linksys 5 port workgroup switch.

I used the wizard on machine A, which also has the cable modem attached to
it, and used the wizard floppy on machine B. Both machines can now connect
to the internet with no problem but cannot find each other.

On machine A nothing is showing on My Network Places apart from an address
for MSN. If I do a search I find machine A's netword details are in My
Network Places - Entire Network - MS Windows Netwrok - Home Network -
Machine A.

On machine B, under Network Neighborhood there is the Entire Network file
and machines B's network file. In the Entire network file there are two
files, one named Home network - which is not accessible through Explorer (so
can I delete this safely?) and the other called Homenetwork, which contains
an identical machine B network file. Which one of machine B's network files
can I delete? (and how do I do this - just right click and delete?)

Anyone know why these machines cannot find each other? Sorry if I've not
made myself (and my problem) very clear, but I'm new at this pc game and I'm
not sure what I'm talking about, so can any replies be in simple language.

Thanks

Jacqueline

make sure you have enabled file and printer sharing and have some things to
be shared. if you have correct settings, the computer should be able to see
itself.

I just set up a similar network and although I don't have
access to my home network right now, I think I had to
configure the sharing option that is within the disk drive
properties that I wanted to share. Let me know if you
don't see this option and I'll look at my network when I
get home...I don't do well from memory.

I've just done this on machine A (xp) and when I look in My Network Places,
then try to view workgroup computers, the machine displays "Homenetwork is
not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently
available. I've no idea why this is happening, as I am trying to view this
from an account with admin priviliges.

I've also done this procedure on machine B (98SE) and it's just duplicated
everything on drive C, and the duplicate copies appear in network
neighborhood - entire network - homenetwork - machine B and also in network
neighborhood - machine B. Can I just delete the files I don't need to share
(obviously I will not delete them from C)?

Would it be easier if I just TRIED to install xp onto the 98SE machine? If
I did try this, would I lose all the files I want to transfer over?

Thank
Jacqueline.

From what I can tell file and printer sharing is enabled on both machine.
The 98SE machine can see itself (twice) but on the XP machine, when I use My
Network Places, then try to view workgroup computers, the machine displays
"Homenetwork is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currently available. I've no idea why this is happening, as I am trying to

Cheers
Jacqueline.

just right click and rename?

Jacqueline,

yes, you can rename the workgroups however you like. To see the
other computer, it is more convenient if it is in the same
workgroup.

But you should be able to see it even if it's in a different
workgroup. In the entire Microsoft Network you should see both
workgroups and the computer(s) in each.

Go ahead and rename the workgroups anyway. Make them all the
same.
Sorry to be so inept, but I'm eager to learn.

Measured by most messages around here, you are everything but
inept.

If you can't find the problem, please have a look at
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm for a list of possible
causes.

Thanks to Bob and Hans-Georg everything is working perfectly now. I'm not
sure exactly what the problem was, I just tried all the suggestions given
and it worked.

I cannot express how grateful I am, as my 98SE machine is so unstable at the
moment that I need to remove everything, format and re-install, as soon as
possible, but as I've done this quite often, hopefully, I will not get into
difficulties.

Thanks again

Jacqueline.

Jacqueline,

thanks for reporting.

Once you want to reinstall anyway, consider upgrading or newly
installing Windows XP on the 98SE machine as well, provided the
machine has at the very least 128 MB of memory. It makes things
a little easier when you have the same operating system on all
machines.
