I am simply (lol....i thought) trying to hook a desktop running win98se to a
loptop running winxp via a crossover cable. I went thru the xp setup wizard
on both computers but the computers on see themselves not each other.I have
very limited network knowledge and am wondering if i can resolve this easily
or should i just punt......

Greetings Rob,

Make sure all firewalls are removed while troubleshooting. XP's firewalls must be disabled on local area networks. It's only intended for direct connections to the Internet. Connecting two machine via a crossover cable without a hub, router, or switch requires a crossover cable and a regular cable won't work. Each machine must be assigned ip addresses, a common subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and workgroup names must be the same (MSHOME default in Windows XP).

I'm having a similar problem. I'd just like a little more
diagnosis though. I'm receiving an error message
informing me that "a network cable is unplugged." It's
possible I have less networking knowledge than you and am
wondering what is the most obvious thing I am overlooking.

Without knowing all the details, what I can tell you with my 2 x XP and 2 x
98SE setup is that when you first set a network up with both those OSs, you
usually don't think about Netbeui. It is installed by default on 98SE and
not installed by default on XP. The easy answer is to either uninstall it on
the 98SE side or install it on the XP side. As MS aren't supporting Netbeui
any longer, the best answer for the future is to get rid of it and use
TCP/IP only.

The second most forgotten thing is to read all the pop up windows that come
up when running the network install wizard. I fell foul of that myself at
one stage. Eg, "Been there, done that, don't need to read that". It clearly
said that anything you want to use in networking should be ON and active,
firewalls OFF etc. Once I ran with internet active, printers on etc and no
firewall on, it worked first time.

Greetings,

A network cable unplugged message means there isn't a live link to another device. This device can be either a router, switch or another computer. It could be any of these reasons.

1. The network cable is really unplugged
2. The network cable is defective
3. It's plugged in but there's nothing plugged in at the other end.
4. The cable is the wrong type.
5. The cable is plugged in the uplink port on the hub, router or a switch instead of a regular port.
6. The network card driver program isn't working right.
7. The network card is automatically sense speed to duplex settings but it's not configured properly.

address......and should it be the same on each computer.....and Im not sure
what the address is or should be.......

I've got a desktop running XP Pro and the other running XP Home and I am
having horrible problems getting these two to talk to each other. I have
created a small home network but can't get them to talk. I keep getting
that same error "A network cable is unplugged". I am trying to connect PC
to PC and am very VERY frustrated. I have spent days trying to resolve
this. Here is what I know:

1. I know the crossover cable is adequately connected on both ends and that
the cable is not defective. I used this cable from both pcs to one other pc
that I am not trying to network and it made the connection.
2. I have verified that there is are no firewalls enabled on both ends.
3. I have assigned IP addresses to both machines per Microsoft's support
info. 192.168.1.100 on one machine and 192.158.1.101 on the other machine.
The subnet mask has been set to 255.255.255.0 and Default gateway 0.0.0.0
for both machines.
4. When going to My Network Places I can see my workgroup (i.e. MSHOME) but
I can't see my own computer on either computer.
5. I don't want to want to use NETBUI protocol because I am not familiar
with, it is not supported, and using the IP addresses is suppose to work.
Since both of my comptuers are XP why use it anyway?
6. My DNS and WINS stuff is not filled in (using XP defaults) so I assume
that is not causing me any problems.
7. I have made sure that everything is shared so that should not be an
issue.
8. The drivers and software seems to be running fine on each computer since
they have been able to connect with a different comptuer.

I'm stuck and have no idea what to do next. PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME!

Why don't you guys get a router and make your lives much simplier.
It solved my problems. They're fairly cheap nowadays :-)
