9800pro without fan

Hi,

I got fed up with the noise on my Club 3D Radeon 9800 pro and decided to
try out the Zalman ZM80-D dual heat pipe eventually with the OP1 fan
later if the card turns out to run too hot.

The problem I encountered was that once the original fan is off the card
and the Zalman heatsink is installed, my computer won't power up. As
soon as I connect the original fan back to the card everything is fine
again so the card itself wasn't broken during the installation.

I'm running the card on an Abit AS8 mainboard with a [email protected] GHz. No
overclocking tried or in mind.

Any suggestions on how to get rid of the fan?

It sounds like the card needs something plugged into it's fan power plug.
I've no idea how to get around that.

You might be able to fake out the card with a resistor. It would like a
similar load as the fan to the card. Look up Ohm's Law for details. ;-)

Physically remove the fan blade (the rotating bit). The magnetic
oscillations which would normally spin the blade would still occur, but
there would be nothing for them to act against, so they'd do nothing.

Whether there'd be EM side effects to this I wouldn't know - but I bet
it'd work.

You could also invest in a silent (or very quiet) fan instead.

This is not recommended: the propeller itself cools its own electric motor. It might melt in a few
minutes without propeller.

Then I think the only 'smart' options are to either just 'deal with'
the noise, or purchase an aftermarket cooler which is low-noise.

An interesting/amusing thread.

You all are aware that many of us use GPU waterblocks
on our vid cards? I ran an ATI 9700Pro without a fan
for several years. The X850XT Platinum Edition on this
system has no fan attached. ( It was a real screamer before
I installed the waterblock.)

For both of those I needed no special action with regard
to the fan, I just disconnected and removed it. I'm sure ATI
is aware that people use cooling options that don't plug into
their fan connector, and there must be some simple way to
run the card with no fan connected. What can you find at
their web site (FAQ, Knowledge Base, forum)

There are plenty of users with 9800 Pros running passive coolers. The
sticking point may be the PCB revision. Later-build 9800 Pros share a common
PCB with the 9800XT; the fan grows an extra wire for RPM monitoring, etc.
Since the 9800 Pro doesn't have a thermal diode, a fan interlock is the only
way to prevent overheating should a fan seize.

A few late model nVidia cards have a small speaker that makes an annoying
sound if the fan is removed or if the fan speed drops below a certain
threshold.

If the fan is 2 wires, they might be sensing the load (current flow) or
possibly the pulsation in the power lead which happens as the motor
switches the drive coils in sequence (commutation). If the motor is 3
wires, there is a 1/turn pulse that the system detects as rotating. The
motor current is proportional to the load on it meaning if you remove
the blades, the power level will drop (unless you mount it so that it's
rubbing on something) and it won't require cooling -- it won't burn up
or melt. I said BLADES OK to remove. The magnetic core must still
rotate freely or it WILL burn up.

I bought a 9600 pro on ebay recently that came with an 'arctic cooling
silencer' installed. Very quiet and cool but it does take extra space
for the exhaust port.
