I'm looking into getting a replacement for my Ti4200.

I saw a TYAN G9800pro 128mb. It's 40% cheaper than some of the 9800XT's.

Now, how does the G9800pro perform, compared to the XT?
Can I expect to o/c it to the same speed of the XT?
Look at the pic here: http://www.tyan.com/products/html/g9800pro.html
Doesn't seem to be the best of cooling...

Anyone have experiences or thoughts about this?

Thanks,

from my understanding 9800XT is the head in the graphics market at the
moment. How the 9800 pro performs and overclocks in comparison to the 9800XT
i can't really comment.

I'm in the same boat here, replacing gf3 overclocked to a ti500
Found the built by ati 9800pro retail for $300, the bb ati 9800xt retail is
450( expires 11/26)
I know the pro is the better buy for the money, but I don't know about 256mb
next year at this time.
I could use some help on this too

the 9800pro 128mb will easily overclock to 9800xt speeds but will have 1/2
the memory which won't be an issue even when the directx 9 crop of games are
released.

Time to stop regurgitating the 128vs256mb line, nobody can predict the
outcome of future games; also here's a bench showing a big difference. If
you're going to pay top dollar make sure you get 256mb ram. The 9800np, on
the other hand, is a much better deal than the 9800xt imho, even with 128mb
ram...

Slightly higher clock rate for the XT but I seriously doubt you'd notice the
increase, I'd get the Pro and save the money

Apparently the memory increase does make a difference in Call Of Duty

not all 9800 Pro's will overclock to XT speeds. my Tyan 9800 pro overclocks
to 405 core/365 mem (with Tweakmonster ramsinks).

i still find it hard to believe some web sites saying that they're getting
450 out of a 9800 Pro core. i just don't believe it, at least not at stable
speeds or a major cooling mod.

the Tyan 9800 Pro 128MB is the exact card i have. i overclocked it to
405core/365mem with the help of Tweakmonster BGA ramsinks and a 120mm fan
blowing air downward on to the card (the fan is attached to two PCI slot
screws for support and does not take up any PCI bays).

it's been a very fast and reliable card.

well, yesterday out came the gf3 and in went the XT. wow I jumped ship to
ati, heh.
Still playing with settings and things like that but I learned about new
bottlenecks.
I know my cpu/mb is holding me back from cranking up all the settings.
I have a p4 northwood 2.0 at 2.5 1g memory on an asus p4b266
On my gf3 I use to run blend, not sure in ati's control panel what is
comparable, so I'm in the middle.
3dmark2001 is close to 14k or so on the middle setting.
I am not sure if it was the best investment today, the pro sat there for
300, I paid 450. I have no regrets, just need to tweak the settings some. In
the long run I think I made a good decision. Call of duty has some settings
recommended for 256mb cards.
Fooge, good luck with your decision.

Call of Duty is based on the Quake3 engine... we'll have to what for HL2 or
Doom3 for real world results... Call of duty doesn't even stress a stock
9700pro.

Very highly modified q2 engine, and turn on 4xAA/8XAF at 1280x1024 and a
9700pro is working. My 9800np at 9800pro speeds is.
