9800: rubbish fps in half-life (sometimes).

I just got a 9800, I get great fps in everything but half-life mods. I get
5800 in 3d marks.

My fps just drops for no reason, from 100 to 10.

It's not caused by lag or cpu. I don't have any adware or spyware installed.

Anyone got any ideas? A quick search on google groups found a couple of
other people with the same problem but didnt find a solution.

gfx: ati radeon 9800pro
cpu : athlonxp 2700
memory: 1024gb ddr
 
I play CS on my 9700pro and was getting bad framerates in opengl until i
came across these lines to type into the console

ati_npatch 0.0

and

ati_subdiv 0.0


They worked for me, now i get a solid 100fps.

Hey, I did some research. These commands switch on ati's truform thing.

As you can see it does effect my fps and thats just with the gun model and
the command console model. So I'm guessing when there's like 30 models on
screen at once it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume it would drop as low as
20.

I'm using opengl and have directx9 installed.

get absolutely no frame drops and it runs nice and smooth on HL and CS.
Running Cat 3.7 on XP Pro. Are you running HL in DX8/9 or OpenGL? (I'm
using DX9).
