My new 9800 PRO keeps resetting iself leaving me with the warning message along the lines of "your graphics card has failed to respond to AGP commands" or something along those lines.

I was told it was because i didnt have enough power, so i upgraded to an Antec 550 watt psu, but the problem remains the same. this is windows XP with the latest cat drivers.

Is this a hardware fault or driver issue?

have you checked and made sure everything is fine'n'dandy in the BIOs?

The 9800pro need aditional power to get it going, the AGP slot isnt enough, have you made sure youve plugged in the 4 pin molex straight from the PSU into the back of the card properly?

Make sure Fast Writes are off :)

And yes - make sure it has the additional power, otherwise you can hurt it.

Thanks guys :)

I beefed up my 350 cheapo psu to a 550 watt Antect at the same time as the new card :) this is plugged directly into the card :)

Everything looks ok in the Bios but tbh im not entirely sure what to look for, i changed the video memory to 128mb then agp to 8x but thats it :)

not too sure what fast writes are mate, ill have a look round for a setting :D

ive searched high and low for a way to turn off fast writes :D can someone give me a clue :p

EDIT - Found them and its already turned, off so im back at square one :(

If your motherboard supports fast writes, and it is enabled in the system BIOS, turn fast writes On to improve performance. Otherwise, leave Off
It's in the BIOS, If your MB does not support it, you won't find it.

Ive had problems with 9800 pros where the motherboard supports them, but the computer dosent like them being on for some reason....

I'm starting to think there might be a driver problem. Are you running the latest catalyst drivers ? I've got a 9800pro and my friend has an x800 pe and eh's ahving the same lock ups as me like you described. Is yours crashing all the time or only when doing one thing ?

It crashes completly at random mate, but it will always die when i fire up a game! im runing cat 4.10 which i think is the latest version, ill try uninstalling them and doing it again.

its made by sapphire and i cant get through to their support :(

No worries, same here me and my mate are running catalyst 4.10 and it happens during gaming, usuall joint ops. Seems like a universal problem.

Try setting your AGP Aperture size to 128mb, if its already at 128mb try it at 256mb. Its in your bios somewhere.

I was having problems with my 9800pro when i set my aperture to 256mb, as soon as i set it back down to 128mb it was fine and still is. It cant hurt to try, and its easy to try and set back ;).

Good luck :).

The 9800pro is one of the ebst affordable cards, use the 4.9 catalyst drivers for now, they should run problem free for you. You have got direct x 9.0c installed right ? Latest drivers for your motherboard and all ???

Ok i've done some sniffing around and i've found out some interesting things. There seems to be quite an uproar amongst the counterstrike and call of duty forums abuot this problem, seems like it's quite widespread. The blame seems to be pointing towards to parties. 1) ATI and their 4.10 catalyst drivers and 2) Microsoft XP and service pack 2 and a DEP function. (Thats assuming you're running windows XP mind)

Hopefully this will shed some light on the topic and maybe soemone will be able to expand on things a little more.

Thanks a lot :) i play CS:source and call of duty too  ill try the omega drivers and see how i get on :) if they dont work where can i get cat 4.9? i have 4.8 on the disc that came with the card so ill prolly use them!

BTW im on xp with no service pack 2! i thought id wait till i see what issues people have with it before upgrading.

i can reccomend the omega ones over the official ones, they are "Tweaked" and you now have the option to choose between the "Performance" tweaks or "Quality" tweaks. Very good.

Been playing doom 3 on the omega drivers fine, had them running a couple of hours without single lock up and its all very stable :)

Excellent advice from all of you, thank you very much :)
