How loud are these cards, can you hear the fan spinning with the case
closed, are the arctic coolers much quieter? So many questions....
BTW I don't intend to overclock the card.

TIA

Very Quiet compared to many other cards I have used. I would say no you
wouldn't hear it with the case side on. I just stopped my fan momentily and
I couldn't hear it spin back up....

Cool (no pun!),
So I guess the arctic coolers are only really needed when
overclocking.
Just out of interest, which 9800 do you have?

Cheers

Radeon 9800 Pro (128mb)

I also have a 9600 Pro (256) which is excellent (an just about as quiet)

you wnt to buy one of those arctic coolers anyway, the reference coolers are
not good enough imo, users with hot pc's risk melting the chip, although you
may not have the skill to install one of those coolers, you could try
hightech ones, they do ati's with the same coolers already installed

My system has been running 24/7 for the past six months, through a very hot
summer. My card is quite happy with the standard fan. Are you suggesting
that ATi fit fans that are not capable of cooling the card to a safe
standard? To date Steve, my card has been fine. If you are not
overclocking, then the card will be quite happy and cool. Don't waste your
money, unless you are intending to overclock the card and take it beyond its
safe rated speed. Anything will burn out if you are doing things with it
that weren't intended.

Care to provide a link to a documented case of "melting the chip" with the
stock cooler?

my point is that i don't think the reference coolers are much good, they
*barely* do the job needed, and as a result not surprisingly some poeple
have moaned that their cards have melted chips due to it, and due to the
price of the arctic cooler thingy wotsits (that being bugger all) it's
always good to put on, even if you don't overclock, cooler chips are going
to last longer too

and my name is not Steve

The standard fan is not too loud, it can be heard with the case closed but this
depends how loud you other fans are. mines not a loud system and I could hear
my 9800 pro above the other fans.... but only slightly.

Best purchase I ever made was to change it for the Artic Cooler. almost silent!

Over the last few days I've switched over to a 6800GT and the first thing I did
was to order another Artic Cooler for it. Excellent cooler especially when you
consider how cheap they are. IMO... a must have!

i was reading ebuyer reviews for 9800 pro's and 9800SE's i'm not going thru
them now, there was a few of them saying don't buy, rubbish product the
heatsink isn't good enough it melted etc, i have a 9800 pro myself,
considering my open case, my overkill cooling, the heatsink was still very
hot, I also noted the fan sucked air from the heatsink instead of blowing
air onto it, so i was not at all surprised when i noticed reports about
melted chips, i know 'very hot' is rather vague, it was insanly hot to the
touch, and i hardly had a temp monitor on me

i can easy see users putting these in cramped cases, putting the sides on
and before you know it, hey melted core
my advice is just stick a £6 artic cooler on it, come on, it's not gonna
break the bank considering the price of your card

The melting point of silicon is 2570 degrees Fahrenheit, while the melting
point of the aluminum heat sink is only 1220 degrees. What's wrong with
this picture?

So how hot can the chip run? That's the key and crucial missing piece of
information.

But why waste the money and void the warranty if you don't have to?
