I need a 9800 pro card with a lower noise level than 35db - is the sapphire ultimate my only choice? (silent but
expensive)

Thanx alot in advance.

The other alternative is to get any 9800 Pro and put the same Zalman
heat sink on it that Sapphire uses--whether this well be cheaper than
the Sapphire board I don't know off hand.

Or one could easily make a blank PCI card to carry a quiet 80mm case fan and
mount it in the slot below the video card.

Just use the backplate of an old obsolete pci card and obtain a piece of f/glass
PCB. shape it to fit the pci slot. Remove the copper from the area where it
plugs in to the pci slot. Cut the hole out for the fan and you now have a
excellent virtually noise free solution for your video card and which gives
optimum cooling. Just put the original fan somewhere safe for when you resell
the card.

Just a suggestion which works well for me.

Regards

John

yikes. is the 35db constant or is it only under heavy load?

Another simple alternative:

Bend a spare slot cover 90 degrees so it is parallel to the video card.
Drill two holes in the metal to fit the screws in a 60mm or 800 mm case fan.
It will blow straight across the card, cooling the ram and pcb as well as
the gpu. That kind of airflow will allow you to replace the stock card
cooler with a larger passive sink, like a 486 hsf or cut-down socket A, etc.
Same cooloing, less noise, no cost.

whats that like 4 PCI slots blocked..or what?.....yikes wheres the lateral PCB I beam reinforcment

Who cares? How many people, actually 'use' PCI anymore? If it weren't for
my NIC, I'd have about 7 inches of free space on my board (has 6, yeah SIX,
PCI slots). Talk about wasted real estate!
