to his PC between the time it last worked and when he discovered that it
didn't? How would you describe the demeanour of it not working?

More info needed for a sensible reply. No manufacturer make products that
will delibertly die on you. Did he OC the crap out of it? If yes, then maybe
something smoked up..

Yes it is a little known problem with the 9800Pro cards. After just a few
months sometimes even days the cards just die. So far there has been reports
of over 100,000 dead 9800Pros. But the fact is you'll never read about this
in the news because it's a conspiracy. ATI just wants to get as much money
as they can before the story breaks wide open. ATI has paid off top people
in high places to keep this hush hush. Please don't tell anyone else about
this. Your life may be at risk if ATI finds out you know the truth. JLC
 
It's been reported to stop working when you shut the computer down. The
only known fix is to reboot.
