9800 Pro 128 or 256MB?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I've just defected from the
nvidia group for my new video card purchase and was wondering if the
extra 128B on the 256MB card is worth it or just a waste of ££?

Mmm... if the 256Mb run at the same clockrate as the 128Mb version
then it's not waste.

Not many games need more as 128Mb though.... but those who can use it
definitly will love it. But then the memory should atleast run fast
enough to keep up with the GPU.
 
Welcome aboard. I did the same thing last summer having owned Nvidia and
3DFX cards before. Have a look at Tom's Hardware site. All of the latest
video cards are reviewed there including the 9800 pro and 9800 XT with its
256 megs of memory. It's interesting to note that the additional 256 megs
of memory does not provide any additional performance except where you are
running at the highest resolutions like 1600x1200. In my view it's not
worth the extra money, and by the time it is, there will be a new generation
of video cards to invest your money in.

I've run both a 256mb and a 128mb card. The 128mb card o/c'd much higher
than the 256mb. The higher clock speed of the 128 card produced the best
performance.

I currently have the 128mb card modded with some extra cooling. :)

No noticable improvement in speed, nor recorded with benchmarks..

Possible improvement is 0~3fps... when in 1600x1200.

Thanks to all for the replies.

I've ordered the 128MB Pro card. I do like to run most of my games at
1600x1200 without FSAA but looking at sites like tomshardware it's
difficult to justify the extra 128MB from a performance point of view.

I think I'll be happy with the 128MB - thanks again.
