Donna

Does Microsoft recommend that you do not use Windows 98 as
a Server with an XP Client?

Can you install XP on a Pentium II with 64meg RAM?

Thanks for your reply.

I am using a Pentium II Windows 98 desktop as the Server
and a Pentium IV Windows XP laptop as a Client but I
sometimes get an error message on the Client station with
an Access 2000 database file that says "unrecognizable
database format" from the Server. Someone from another
newsgroup said Microsoft tells you not to use Win 98 as a
Server with Win XP as a Client. Do you agree?

No, that's not correct. Windows XP may be better suited as a
workgroup server, but 98 can certainly be used as a file and
printer server without any fundamental problems.

Hi Donna,

It would be better the other way around, but it might be easier and less
complicated if you had a 98 "server".

64MB of ram is not enough at all, you might get away with the Pentium II. I
have personally successfully installed WinXP Pro on a Pentium II 450 with
512MB of RAM and I can say that it ran pretty well considering the
processor.

Obviously I tuned for "best performance"

All the best
