Just changed sbs 2000 from dialup to cable modem. SBS has single nic. Isa uninstalled. Sonicwall router between cable modem and sbs. I think I have a wins problem. Any suggestions?

Unlikely to be WINS. More likely DNS/default gateway type
problem. Can any other type of client connect? Can you
ping names and/or addresses on the internet?

Thank You for your reply Anthony.

XP and 2000 clients connect to internet if I point gateway in their properties to the router ip. On 98 client pinging yahoo.com gives ip address of yahoo but i get time out replies. If i ping yahoo address i get time outs.

Make sure in SBS you have DNS setup properly and that forwarders are setup.
Make sure the"." root zone is deleted so that you have the ability to
forward request. Make sure that the clients are poing to the IP address of
the Dns.

Hello,

Thank you for your post!

It will not be an issue with WINS, because WINS is used for only Netbios
name resolution not domain name resolution.

Typical configuration is to have the Win98 clients primary DNS IP setting
using the internal IP Address of the SBS Server. The SBS Server intern will
have DNS forward the request to the NAT router or ISP DNS servers by using
forwarders. The forwarders can be configure within the DNS MMC on the SBS
Server within the properities of the server.

Example:
Win98 (Client) ===============>SBS Server==========> NAT Router
IP 192.168.1.x (DHCP Assign) IP 192.168.1.1
IP 192.168.1.254
Default Gateway 192.168.1.254 Same as Client ISP
DNS 192.168.1.1 Same as Client
ISP DNS Server IP
