hi all,

ive got a 9700pro and ive had it since they came out. What kind of card
could i get for a decent upgrade for no more than £150? ive looked at
6600GT but theres not that much more performance.
Should i spend a little more or stay with what i have until prices come down
a bit.?

thanks for any reply

Do you need to run newer 3D games at over 1024x768? Have you recently
upgraded to a new LCD 17 or 19" display? If no, then you don't need to
upgrade.

I would definitely hang on. Give it even just another 6 to 9 months and you
should be able to get something much more compelling in the way of an
upgrade with the same amount of dollar lolly.

Given the way computer prices go the same would be true 6 to 9 months
after whenever you decide to buy. I'm in the same situation with my
9700pro but will they still be making top of the line AGP video cards?

6600 GT is hardly top of the line. It's a good bang for the buck but
doesn't offer enough of an improvement to justify the cost. (IMO, of
course).

The 6 to 9 months statement will always be true but it's worth his while to
hang on until something (x800 / 6800 at least) becomes more affordable to
him.

That's very true, but in this case, the original poster already has a card
that really isn't bad. If he had a 9600 Pro or lower, then I'd say that
spending £150 on a new card right now would give a worthwhile performance
boost. But once the R520 comes out, and nVidia releases additional cards of
their own, you'll probably be doing much better spending the same amount of
money - again, taking into account that the original poster has a 9700 Pro.

This is anyone's guess, but I would think maybe another year at most. As
long as market demand is strong enough to justify AGP versions, I think
they'll be around. But I think most gamers and other users who demand a lot
of computing power will have moved to PCI-E by next year at the latest. I
know that's when I'll be jumping on.

WHAT! This card score around 5000 point in 3dmark05. It beat the
9800pro 2 time.

That is why when I upgrade my video card it will mean a new
motherboard, cpu, video card and maybe even more memory. I really
can't justify the cost just to be able to play one action game over
the Internet.

Especially since a decent PC (Athlon 64 3000+ or P4 2.8+) with a decent AGP
card (such as a 9800 Pro) will run just about everything for the foreseeable
future.

You're confusing it with the 6800 GT. 5000 isn't a typical 6600 gt score
unless it's SLI.

Around means 4500 + anyway peoples with sli are having 5000+ on
3dmark05
Also, the bfg 6600gt oc was the card that i would have bought if i
hadn't to get a video "in" card. To get this straight the top of the
line is the gigabyte 6600gt turbo or something like that. it has a
1120mhz mem and 530mhz with the gpu vs 1050 with the bfg and 500mhz
for the gpu.

So i was pretty much there.

That link doesn't work but using a search function in Tom's Hardware gives
a false impression as it returns the top results and inevitably ends up with
the water cooled, super overclockers who run the program with tons of
artifacts.

A realistic result is the 3281 scored in Tom's hardware VGA charts. I'm
sure some could do somewhat better but even 4500 isn't a realistic 6600 GT
score *at all*.
