9700 Pro - suck or blow ?

I have a 9700Pro mounted in a fairly standard tower case.

I'm running the latest Omega drivers and on the whole it all runs OK.

If I really hammer it for a long time at high resolutions it can sometimes
lock up.

My current suspect is overheating, my card has a standard, fairly weedy
looking, cooler.

I've bought a case fan which I'm fitting fairly near the card.

When I've some more money I'm going to get a new case and suck air in the
front and blow it out the back, but for now I have no practical extra fan
mounting points.

What I want to know is, should I blow out hot air from near the card or suck
in cold air from outside ?

All experiences/ideas welcome.

The standard is to suck cool air in at the front of the case using a fan,
and then blow it out of the back of the case using another fan. I currently
have 2 in the front and 2 in the back and my motherboard stays at room
temperature. It's the motherboard chipset temperature that gives you a good
idea what the temperature in the case is.

I found the easiest way to fix the video card overheating was to use a
slot fan mounted right below the card. It brings in cool air and blows
out the hot air from the card. I can feel the heat from it when running
3D applications.

You could use the hardware fix
for the spacer probelm if you
don't mind negating your warantee.

Remove the fan and heat sink (press tabs).

Remove the spacer between the heatsink
and the VPU. Put a exacto knife under it
and it will pop right off.

Clean all the heat conductive goo off the core
and the heat sink with ISO Alcohol.

Lap the heat sink where it contacts the core.

Put some artic silver on the core.

Slap the heat sink back on. Overclock at will.

Get rid of the extra fan/noise.

Should be detailed instruxcions for this at Rage3d.

Otherwise cold air in as long as you have
good case fannage above the video card.
