If I choose "Video CD" for the Personal Recorder settings in MMC 8.8,
I can fit a 2 hour movie on a DVD. That sucks. I should be able to use
"DVD High", right?

I am using Roxio Easy CD/DVD Creator 6 and am looking for some help.
What are the right settings to get decent DVD-like quality for a 2
hour show that fits on a DVD that will work like any commercial DVD?

Thank you.

Last night, I recorded a two hour show with the DVD high profile in MMC,
and it came out to about 2.5 gigs. For digital cable, I setup a profile
based on the DVD high default profile, with 6mb low and 8mb high VBR,
and default Video Soap. Because the source material is very clean, I
can use that high of a bitrate and still get two hours on a DVD with no
problem.

For analog cable, I setup up a different profile based on the DVD high
profile. I set it for 5mb low and 7mb high VBR, and use the Heavy Video
Soap with a strength of 70%. Because the analog cable signal is very
dirty with video noise, MMC "thinks" it is very complex material and
therefore utilizes much more of the available bitrate to render the
picture. The higher you can set the Video Soap to clean up the signal,
the smaller your resultant mpeg will be. You might have to play around
with the bitrate awhile to figure out what will be required to fit a two
hour video on a DVD, but it can certainly be done with very good
results. Of course, your results depend heavily on the source material.

Thank you for the info on the Video Soap. I was wondering what impact
there would be to setting it higher. I look forward to trying out your
suggestions.
