hello
at first ... sorry because of my english. ;)

i've since nearly 2a my sapphire 9600xt.
6 months ago i'ved replace the fan with an zalman zm80 D-HP.
2 months ago i've played my last 3d Game(nibiru).
Afterwards i get first different Systemcrashes (nearly 1h after powerup)
I thought maybee the newest ati driver would help.
With the new driver the system reboots automatically after the windows
bootscreen. (each time) :(
My only chance was to change the driver to the windows (wdm) driver.
With this driver i've no systemcrashes, dxdiag tests run correct but
i've no extra funktionality like tv-out.

Sapphiretech wrote me ... maybee an new bios for my graphic card would
help. But the problem is now still the same.

last weak i've to change my power supply. My hope was - maybee it's an
powerproblem. But the ati driver still would'nt work.

Now my questions.
can someone explain me the problem?
Is it a problem of the video card or maybee of the mainboard?
Is there an utility to check my videocard ?

Thanks in advance for you help.

Rico

Try these first:

1) run your anti-virus to rule out virus infection

2) when you install the latest ATI driver, did you remove your old ATI
driver completely? You need to use CATALYST Uninstaller available at
ATI website to remove ATI driver COMPLETELY. I like to run RegCleaner
after that too. After this, you can install the new driver. I use
9800XT and it works perfectly well for me.

Yes i've used the catalyst uninstaller - after this nothing would work
anymore. Because of this i'ved installed another windows xp installation
on an clean harddisk. I'ved installed sp1 + sp2 too and at last the
newest catalyst driver. Then i get exactly the same problem.

I think because of the virgin system it can also be no virus/uninstall
problem.

I assume you installed .Net framework?

By the way, you can still get virus if you're contacted to the internet
when you're installing Window XP. So, do not have internet connection
during your Window XP installation. After Window XP installation,
install anti-virus then contact to internet.

Do you have an onbarod graphic chip? I suggest take out your 9600xt
and see if the on board graphic will work. If the on board graphic
will work, then we know 9600xt or ATI driver is the problem.

Okay ..
i'll test it this weekend again with an very clean installation.
At the momtent i get sp1 sp2 .net framework (1.1 and 2.0) and the latest
version of the ati original driver (6.9).

At the first installation i get the warning of an missing
dotnetframework 2.0 installation. Do i need an intallation of dotnet1.1
too? I've read such a thing as an possible reason for errors.

an other question. could it be an hardware error? At the moment i've no
second graphic card to test. Is there maybee a tool to make an low level
hardwarecheck of the graphiccard? (mem Chips and graphic prozessor).

and now for the erroneous microsoft i changed the digital signature from
pgp/mime to pgp inline beause of the "wrong warning"

Actually that is not true. The current ATI drivers require Net 2.0. 1.1
is not required.

Are you sure about that.
I have only 1.1 installed and ATI drivers work fine!

Microsoft info page for 2.0 says for programming funtionality, nothing about
required to run programs.
Course, not first time Microsoft information pages were incorrect!

This is confusing. Somewhere on ATI's site I read it doesn't matter which
you use. Can't recall where. I only installed .NET 2.0 when reinstalling XP
and have no problems from this that I'm aware of. I see now that in
ati.com/install the link is to .NET 1.1.

This doesn't exactly clear it up for me especially in relation to
ATI............
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnnetdep/html/useragent.asp
................It would seem in general it'd be a good idea to have both.
YMMV

Anyone have a better link?

The drivers don't require it. CCC does.
