is there any advantage going to a 9800Pro from a 9600XT?...the specs are
confusing..the XT has a faster core and the Pro faster memory according to
ATI's site..so which is better?

I have both, and I can't tell. I think the only place I can
see a bit of a difference is frame rate in Far Cry in the
River level at the end of the level where so many Mercs
are getting after me. I see a slow down on my 9600XT
but no slow down at all on my 9800 Pro ( 256 bit ).
However, the 9800 is in an AMD 64 with 1 gig ddr400,
and the 9600 is in an AMD 2000+ with 1 gig sd133
.... pathetic! But I actually think the sd133 might be dragging the 9600
down. In Doom3, I actually believe
the 9600 looks better. Why ? Not a clue. In Far Cry,
on the 9600, I have mostly medium video settings.
With the 9800 / AMD 64 I have all high settings. I see
no real difference visually. Occasionally, I run CAD
on the 9600XT without the slightest problem at all.
the 9800 machine IS a CAD workstation, and it runs
anything I throw at it .... clearly beating the tar out of
a Xeon workstation running a Quadro4 900xgl card
.... which is a pig of a slow card ( 300 mhz ).

Although a 9600XT has higher core and memory clocks, it's a 4 pipeline
128bit card. The 9800 Pro is an 8 pipeline 256bit unit. Considerably more
throughput and performance. Definitely worth the extra money

The XT is about 10% better, not a very good value for money upgrade.

10% difference between a 9600XT and a 9800 Pro? I think not. He's not
asking about a 9800XT and a 9800 Pro. These two have less than a 10%
difference in performance.

Oops, sorry, I misread the OP's message, you are right, there should
be a noticeable difference.
