I've never understood why anyone asks this type of question as invariably
whichever one I bought is totally the wrong one and that I was a complete
pratt to have bought the one I have.

I've come across a couple of reviews as I've just upgraded and was having to
make the same choice. If you want better Opengl perfomance stick with
Nvidia, if directx3d then it depends upon which game your interested in
playing. Some are faster with 9600xt, others 5700 Ultra.

I choose the 9600xt as I wanted to see for my self what the radeon
technology was all about. I'm very impressed. I'd forgotton how good ATI are
at video support. Playing some dvdshrink DVD copies using PowerDVD produced
much better results with Radeon hardware support than my previous Nvidia
card.

It's a toss up. I tried both extensively before settling on the 9600XT. The
only reason was size and noise. The 5700 ultra is big enough to cut off some
ide channels and no matter which brand( I tried PNY EVGA and Assylum) noisy.

I just ordered a 5700 ultra (only dual dvi within price range(i do like
ati;)(not trolling))). What did you mean cut off ide channels? Also no
visual preference at all???/

If the 9700 is "completely unstable" then the first thing to do is find out
why--if the board's not defective and you've tried reinstalling from
scratch then there's something else causing the instability and that
"something else" likely will cause instability with any other board.

Did you run detonator destroyer before you installed the ATI board?

I meant in the case itself. The card is long enough to physically block the
IDE ports that HDs and peripherals plug into. In my case I would be bending
around a bit and on others I was working on the placement didn't work at all
due to length. As for visuals the ATI seems sharper for everyday use and is
definately better with AA & AF jacked up. ATI: sharper, quieter, cooler
running and a tad faster. But the 5700ultra just seems hardier and brighter.
I am a solid Nvidia until this card and I have to say it was a tough
discision. I still like those 5700 ultras though and wish I could run both.
