Well I am almost there, leaving the GF2 camp. Have a PowerColor 9600Pro
128/128 card coming in a few days. Which drivers are the best performers
verses best stability. Any mods I should know about? Is it true I need to
completely remove the Nvidia drivers before installing?

Any input welcome
Thanks in advance

Yes, you should uninstall the NVidia drivers, shut down your machine,
change cards and boot up again. When the new hardware wizard appears,
cancel out of it: don't let Windows go looking for a driver. It would
be a good idea to clean any remnants of the NVidia drivers from your
system before installing the Ati ones - both Nvidia and Ati are known
for their poor uninstall routines, and remnants from one brand's
drivers can seriously interfere with the performance of another. I
believe there are apps specifically for removing NVidia driver
remnants; otherwise try Driver Cleaner or a similar app. Then run the
Ati driver installation.

With Ati, it's generally true that the most recent drivers are the
best - not always, and some people have their favourites, but
generally true. The current driver, Catalyst 4.6, is excellent, and
very stable. It can sometimes be worth trying your OEM's own versions
of the Ati drivers; they are sometimes optimised for the OEM's cards.
Omegadriver's versions can be good for gaming performance, too.

Probably a good idea to reinstall DX9 before installing the card
drivers. HTH

Use the ATI uninstaller as well as the Nvidia uninstaller,
and then browse for any remnants of either. I just
replaced my ATI Radeon 9000 128 Pro, and before
I put a new Gigabyte 9600XT in the system, I totally
wiped any sign of the Catalyst 4.5 drivers ... then
installed the 9600. Came up running fine, but colors
were badly screwed up in Far Cry. I knew that the
problem was "fast writes", so I disabled that, and
Far Cry runs perfectly on the Catalyst 4.6 drivers.
9600 autodetected to all medium settings. I will
tweak the settings in a week or two once I see how
the card performs. Other than that, the install was
easy and simple.
