9600 installs, doesn't work

I bought a 9600 AIW on ebay, and got the breakout cable and install CD
from ATI.

Installed it in my 3G P4, 512M PC, Windows 2000, SP4. It seemed to
install everything I expected, but when it got all finished, I didn't
have the control center shortcuts or access in the Programs menu. I ran
the test to see if the install worked, and it crashes at the CC
software check.

Before I just give it up in total frustration, I figured I might ask if
there is a trick, a secret, or some logical way to proceed. Since the
CD is from ATI, I would expect that it would be the right stuff, but to
be honest, there is so dang much on there that it installed, its a bit
overwhelming. I downloaded the control center exe from their web site.
It seemed time stamped as a bit newer, but it made no difference. Its
just not installed on the machine.

I know there is not much detailed info here, but I am just looking for
a place to begin, as ATI is no help with their computerized tech
support, and I really don't want to pay money to get help on the phone.

I don't run 2000, so I can't really help you but I would go here:

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894

and download the driver and version of MMC they recommend for 2000 rather
than the disk that came with your card. Find the ATI S/W Unistall utility
first and run that _before_ you do anything else. Then follow the
instructions. It's usually (and I'm doing this from memory so use their
instructions, not mine) driver first, DAO next and MMC last.

Thanks for the help with my ATI AIW. I just went and did a clean OS
install, and started out with the AIW card, and everything loaded up
and seems to be running.

If anyone is willing to wing walk with me: <g>

I got the card, because I want to record from my VHS to archive my home
movies onto DVDs.

Too many features, and too many menus, and I cannot find my way through
all the other things this card can do. One day, I will connect up my
CATV, and get a kick out of that, but for now, I guess I am wondering
where I can find simple overviews of each of the cool features so I can
find the record/capture stuff I need to get going on my recording.

Is there maybe a link, or an "ATI AIW for dummies" page or book
somewhere? :-)

Sure do appreicate any help I can get.

Good stuff. Thanks. I have gotten past recording from the VCR and of
course TV, and now need to make movies onto a DVD. Does ATI provide
software to convert the mpegs and other formats, to DVD/ vob, and I
suppose SVCD might be nice? I don't see any among what I have
installed.

The software I have installed came from a CD that I purchased from
ATI, when I bought the breakout cable. It seems to have all the
software that is on the site, but I am also still not fluent in all the
different options and modes that are available, so I may well be
missing something.

Just hoping I don't need to go scrounging third party software to get
from mpeg to vob <g>
