My intention is to replace an extremely unstable ME
machine in a business peer to peer network consisting of
one other 95 machine and one other 98 machine with a new
machine running XP Pro.

On installation the XP Pro machine can see the 95 and 98
machines but if one tries to browse to the XP Pro machine
using Network Neigborhood or the unc path from the 98 or
95 machine then an "unknown error 32" or "extended error"
message is reported (the 95/98/ME machines have no
problems with each other). I tried to use the networking
wizard on the XP Pro CD as a test and it rebooted the 98
machine as usually and stated that it could not continue.

P.S. The XP Pro machine has no problems with my own
personal 98 machines which is the real oddity. The only
difference is a physical move in space from one network to
the other, a different gateway address, and a different
brand of switch. I'm stumped.

Error 31 means that XP has refused network access to a non-passworded
user account on another computer. As a default security measure, XP,
requires a password.

Either add a password to the account on each computer where it exists,
or allow non-passworded access, as shown here:
