Trying to get better quality while recording TV, I just replaced an
AverMedia TV Studio card and a GeForce 2 Ultra card with an ATI AIW 8500DV
on Windows XP Pro. My goal was accomplished, but there is one very useful
feature of my previous setup that I miss enormously in my new setup: I could
set up a show to be recorded and then lock my computer and the Avermedia
software would still record the show. I can't seem to manage that with the
AIW. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish recording while the PC is
secured?

As long as AtiSched.exe is running in the list of processes, it should work
while locked down. One thing you might try...instead of locking it
down.....simply choose "log off user" and then choose "switch user", this
will put you at the password prompt while everything that was running is
still running. Try it, I bet it works.

It's been a while since I've messed with the TV stuff on my 8500DV
but I remember that the TV functions only work when the user is
logged in as the user that installed the TV software. My memory
is a bit fuzzy but I remember reading complaints from people with
multi-user households who weren't getting scheduled recordings
when other people were using the machine.

I double checked and found that the setup you describe is how my computer is
configured. I usually just hit the "Window" + "L" key combination to get to
the password prompt, but tried going through the "log off user" route. I
still end up with the same issue.

A little further information about the problem I run into: When I log back
on to the computer after something has been scheduled to be recorded I get
an error message from the ATI TV program that says "TV Player unable to
initialize video." I'm using version 7.7 of the ATI MMC.

Thanks for the tip. I'll try setting up the recording for a time when noone
else will be using the computer and see if that might be the issue. I think
I've already done that, but I'll make sure this time.
