I have been having this fun problem with my computer (all recently new
components, by the way) where it works perfectly in all ways until I try
to run a game. DirectX, openGL, doesn't matter. I won't get more than
fifteen minutes or so (at the most) of play before the system hangs,
looping the last sound and displaying a very ugly set of colorful
vertical lines on my screen.

I ultimately decided the issue was my sound blaster live, after I took
it out and the problem went away, at least for a while. Then I
discovered that the crash is still there, it just takes longer to happen
now. What is going on?

Believe me when I say that I had tried everything up to the point that I
took my SBLive out. Now I don't have that problem as MUCH, but it just
takes a lot longer to happen! I don't want to take my SBLive out. I
like it. I like how it sounds with this expensive goddamn sound system
that is now plugged mercilessly into dinky onboard audio. Can anybody
help me do something to my computer that will let me live with my Live!
in peace? Or am I doomed to buying a new sound card AGAIN? Plus, the
problem isn't just with the sound card! It's something in my video card
too! I don't have a lot of money, and buying new hardware is an
expensive prospect for me, I'd rather not do it again, but I'm starting
to think I'll have to. Why did ATI do this to me?

First things first, here are my specs:
-PCChips M811 mboard w/VIAKT266A northbridge & VT8235 southbridge
-flashed with latest available BIOS
-512MB DDR 2100
-ATI All-in-wonder Radeon 8500DV 64MB DDR (with firewire disabled on the
card)
-Firewire capture card
-Onboard sound and ethernet is being used right now
-Two Maxtor HDs, one at 120G one at 60G
-One Memorex CD-RW drive, one Iomega CD-RW drive
-epson printer on usb
-canon scanner on usb
-sony camcorder sometimes on usb
-viewsonic a90f+ monitor

Not sure how much bearing most of that has on the issue at hand, but you
never know. I desperately need an answer, and basically I just want to
know if this is fixable or not. Like I said, you must believe me when I
say I have already tried EVERYTHING that I can think of, and that's a
lot. Either it's impossible or there is some obscure little answer that
I haven't found yet.

Please help!

Hi Miles,
it seems to me a VIA driver problem.
Look here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300
Maybe you have to remove ATI video drivers before, and re-install after VIA Hyperion drivers .In VIA site you will found detailed instructions. Check also in Windows OS, System Utilities, Microsoft System Information, if DirectX is running properly.
