After all this time I've noticed that you can also plug the back of the card
into the computer's power supply with a wire similar to the one that powers
the floppy drive. Is this necessary to do this? Why have it as I've been
running the card without the extra power not for almost 2 years. Is there
any advantage?

It has a fan, right?

Make sure it is indeed a power connector. All online reviews I've seen
regarding the 8500 AIW do not show the connector in any of the photos.

The connector could be an audio header to connect to the sound card or
onboard sound...

This is a external power for the firewire plug and has no effect in the
running of the card other than that. If you are not using that plug then you
don't need the extra power.
