Hello All,
Anyone know why a Win 2K pro pc all updates , keeps wanting to install
832483 MDAC update?
It installs, the update say it installed succesfully, but if auto update is
on it will reinstall again a few mins. later. If you go to the MS update
site & scann for updates it wants to install this one.
Thanks for any ideas

I have two Windows 2000 SP 4 machines. One is showing the same behaviour
you describe with 832483 and the other with 891861 (Rollup 1 for W2000 SP4).

I don't know whether there is a connection, but this only started since I
started using the new Microsoft Update service, rather than Windows Update
and Office Update services.

My problem with the 832483 system appears to be resolved. Rather than using
Microsoft Update or Automatic Updates, I went to www.microsoft.com/downloads
and saved the patch to disk. Restarting in Safe Mode and running the patch
I got an error message saying that it was trying to update a newer
component. I used Add/Remove Programs to remove a later MDAC fix, then
successfully re-ran the patch, still in Safe Mode. After that neither
Microsoft Update or Automatic Updates want to reinstall 832483 again.

Unfortunately the same recipe has not worked for 891861 (Rollup 1 for W2000
SP4) :-(

Regards

Richard

For those who are interested, my problem with 891861 (Rollup 1 for W2000)
wanting to install itself again after a 'successful' install was resolved as
follows.

1. Remove all Windows hotfixes via Add/Remove programms (yes it look ages).
2. Switch off automatic updates.
3. Visit Microsoft Updates site.

After about a hundred reloads of KB832483 reloading and reloading... I
fixed the problem!

1)Remove Hotfix for MDAC2.53
It will warn you that you may be removing useful components, etc. just reply
"Yes" anyway!
2)Run Update again and it will find 3 uploads;
KB832483, a rollup and some other (can't remember, but not important) Just
load all three.
Hint: I saw a KB article about loading components in the wrong order could
cause this problem, so I looked for another MDAC update, it was the only one
on my machine.
3)Enjoy life again!
