I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 2000
and SP4. Every day I get an automatic update to reinstall
819696 security for directX. I reinstall it and the next
day I have to reinstall it again. It apparently is being
over written by the original disk copy which then requires
reinstallation. I run Norton Virus Checker with up to
date virus definition files and scan my computer
everyday. I have no viruses that I know of yet people who
use hotmail tell me that they get messages that I am
sending a virus. Any idea?

Use the registry editor to navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows 2000

Locate the Q or KB 819696 sub-key in the SP4 or SP5 subkey
and delete it.
Restart your computer and install 819696 from Windows Update.

Your virus concern is likely some virus on someone elses computer
spamming your name.

I searched the registry and couldn't find 819696 so there
was nothing to delete. Any other thoughts?

Sincerely,
Tony
