816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine

I am becoming annoyed at this constant updating request I am receiving. Its
always the same request to install an update to the Microsoft VM. I install
it as requested, then re-boot as requested. The next day and every day
thereafter I receive the exact same request. What's happening? How can I stop
this cycle and yet continue to receive valid updates from time to time?

I ran into a similar problem when I tried to install the current Windows
updates on two Windows 2000 systems. One system updated fine. On the second:
- attempts to install fix 816093 ended with error message "unable to
complete installation"
- however, "update history" shows the fix successfully installed
- however, if you run Windows update again, it says you need fix 816093
- repeat as many times as you care to do so

I found more discussion of this problem in a thread in "Windows 2000
General" named "SP1 not installed error on Win 2k with SP4 installed". Based
on that discussion, I copied 3 files from the "good" Win2K system to the
system with the problem. As far as I can tell, that resolved the problem.
(Who knows if it really did, or what other future problems it might cause?
Well, nobody knows, of course.)

The files involved are in the \WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory (or might be
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32).
