Been using ms as for quite a while with no problems. upgraded to defender
and now getting error 0x8050800c whenever i try to run a scan.

Also getting "windows defender definitions haven't been updated in 21 days"
in home page of defender. Clicking on "Check for Updates" does nothing but
"click" noise. I de-installed defender, rebooted, reinstalled it, rebooted
again, and stillhave same problem. Ran Windows Update and have all patches
applied.
Anybody else seeing this?

Got same error.
I have read in newsgroup that there will be a fix for that in near future.
Seems to be problem with registry.

Has anyone received an update on this issue? I just upgraded from MS
AntiSpyware to Defender and I get this error.

Have you managed to get updates installed? I want to clarify whether your
problem is scanning, updating, or both? There was an update which changed
one scanning problem, so tackling updates first is a good idea.

The new app updates via Windows Update or AutoUpdate.

This occurs during scanning after I click on the "Check for updates button".
The full error message is:

"Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x8050800c. An unexpected problem
occurred. Install any available updates, and then try to start the program
again. (To check for updates, click Start, click All Programs, and then
click Windows Update.)"

Is this a corporate, managed, network, or a home machine?

Are you able to go to Windows Update? And, if you do, are updates for
Windows defender offered?

This machine is on my home network. It is running window xp pro. I
successfully updated another machine on the network. Windows Update did offer
a patch that I installed and still the program gives this error.

The update did not install through Defender when it should have. I had to
go to the site and select to install it. But it did install successfully.
It just does not fix the issue.

This error can be due to a bug.

If your disk partition is dynamic, this scan error is likely due to a bug.
The update to fix it should be available soon, but was not in the most
recent update as of this writing.

If your disk partition is basic, a chkdsk run may correct the error.
