802.11b on multiple networks with WEP?

I use a wireless network in my apartment to connect my
Presario 2701 running XP-Pro and a Linksys WPC11 V3.0
adapter to the internet. My University also has a
wireless network. Both networks (home and school) use
WEP.

Question; Can my wireless adapter be configured so that I
can easily connect to either network? And if so how?

Thanks,

Mike

If both networks broadcast the SSID then they will appear in the list of
available networks, and it's easy (relatively) to pick one or the other. You
might have to let Windows manage the network connection (I prefer to do it
myself, thanks).
Otherwise, it depends on the adapter and the software support for it.
I found a huge difference between two at Tech*Ed. the Dlink 650+ that I
normally use was far more difficult to set up for connections to multiple
networks than the card supplied by MS.

I use the "D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+ Utility" program that came with
the card to switch between networks. It sometimes works better than
XP's Wireless Zero Configuration.

You can store WEP settings with the properties of the network using XP's
wireless zero config. So you can configure both as preferred networks and
that might be all you have to do.

The Linksys WPC 11V3 also supports WPA, so if you have a WPA capable router
to connect to, you are covered there as well.

Many thanks for your post Barb. That's the most hopeful
thing I've heard so far. Now can you point me to a little
more information about using XP's wireless zero config?

Thanks again,

Mike

I've written several columns on wireless networking on the Expert Zone which
might be a good place to start.
