I am getting the above error when I try to connect. I have had numerous
difficulties getting VPNs to work on various systems and, as such, have been
through all the variety of soultion suggestions. Here are the specifics:

The server sits behind a Firewall on a DSL modem.
The port 1743 is enable for traffic on the firewall.
RAS server setup on the server to accept PPTP user connections for a
specific user.
PPTP WAN nework connection setup on the client.

Am i missing anything?

PPTP is port 1723, don't forget to open a second port (PPTP_Tunnel)
