How can I get my new drive(80 gigs 7200 rpm with 8 megs
of cache) to get past the reboot after loading xp files.
The drive is ok and loads 98se just fine. With xp I get a
blue screen with the error unmountable_boot_volume after
files are loaded after the first restart that xp does.

Is the Windows 98se drive set as your master drive and the
Windows XP drive set as your slave drive.

It may require a full format and possibly and FDISK to set
up the drive correctly. Try finding a program like
Partition Magic, this will make it a little easier for you
to set up the drive's.

Hi, Hosea.

Which IDE controller are you using for that HD? RAID, or SATA or some other
exotic interface? If so, you probably need to press F6 when invited, early
in the WinXP Setup process, and wait for instructions to install the drivers
for your mass storage device from the floppy diskette. If you didn't get a
floppy with the drive or interface card, you probably will have to download
it from the HD or interface card maker.

The "smarts" on the WinXP CD-ROM can easily handle the jobs of partitioning
and formatting the HD, and copying files to it. But, before it can reboot
into WinXP from that HD to do the GUI portion of Setup, the proper drivers
must have been incorporated into YOUR copy of WinXP on the HD. If you press
F6 and use the floppy, the drivers will be in place before the reboot.
