8 tables - need 1 form

i have 8 separate tables and dont understand why they need relationships if
they are in the same db. im told the need relationships. i add a common field
to each and attempt to relate them. i am allowed to create my query and form
then. then i try to add data with my form, i get this error.

'The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they
would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship.
(Error 3022) Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate
data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries,
and try again. '

im stuck guys...and gals...

Show us the SQL. Open the query in design view. Next go to View, SQL View
and copy and past it here. Information on primary keys and relationships
would be a nice touch too.

you will see i have a 'NAME' column that is the common field i want to link,
but i get an error of having a NULL value when i try to set the 01 Name field
as the primary key in each Table.

Where to start....

First off your database design has a lot of problems. It's not properly
normalize and will probably never work satisfactorily. I highly suggest
getting some relational database training or reading "Database Design for
Mere Mortals" by Hernandez before proceeding any further on this database.

Second when you redesign this database, do not use any special characters,
except the Underscore _ , nor spaces in any table or field names. Trust me on
this. Access allows you to do it, but it's not a good thing.

Next if this is for a business, have you checked the trade journals or other
sources for commercial software? Unless you want to learn Access and database
design, chances are something Off The Shelf is going to be both cheaper and
faster in the long run.

Now to finally answer your question, the right way to do this is to create a
form from your main table and then subforms from it on all your other tables.
Access will then properly populate the foreign key fields.

Jerry, let me give you the basic goal here. i design large custom homes and
want a db to record client information such as preferences throughout their
new house. as far as Access...all i wanted was 1 record per client with about
300 fields reflecting the preferences.

i broke the data up into 8 tables (each table a section of the house plan)
so i could have that many fields...

anyway...i'll leave you alone until i study basic db design...

Where to start....

First off your database design has a lot of problems. It's not properly
normalize and will probably never work satisfactorily. I highly suggest
getting some relational database training or reading "Database Design for
Mere Mortals" by Hernandez before proceeding any further on this database.

Second when you redesign this database, do not use any special characters,
except the Underscore _ , nor spaces in any table or field names. Trust me on
this. Access allows you to do it, but it's not a good thing.

Next if this is for a business, have you checked the trade journals or other
sources for commercial software? Unless you want to learn Access and database
design, chances are something Off The Shelf is going to be both cheaper and
faster in the long run.

Now to finally answer your question, the right way to do this is to create a
form from your main table and then subforms from it on all your other tables.
Access will then properly populate the foreign key fields.

i have 8 separate tables and dont understand why they need relationships if
they are in the same db. im told the need relationships. i add a common field
to each and attempt to relate them. i am allowed to create my query and form
then. then i try to add data with my form, i get this error.
