I've been running Vista since April and haven't had any real problems until
about 2 weeks ago. Suddenly I'm having trouble sending mail. If I'm
horribly persistent I can even send the ones that get stuck in the outbox but
it takes time and patience that I'm running out of. I've removed and
re-added my email accounts, I've verified all of my instructions via my ISP,
I've even tried that patch for "stuck" mail even though I cannot see any
stuck mail. I've checked everywhere I know to check and I need help. I'm
not particularly pc literate so "simple speak" would be great :-) Do I need
to just completely uninstal Windows Mail and start over from scratch? Very
frustrating turn of events.

This problem may be caused by your antivirus.
Windows Mail is not compatible with most McAfee or Norton
security programs. Those will need to be uninstalled, not
just disabled.

After uninstalling your non-compatible antivirus, download
and install a more compatible antivirus like the free Avast:

Even compatible antivirus programs will need to have their
email scanning option turned off. For more on this topic see

I have the same problem. Found out that one outgoing e-mail i causing the
problem. That e-mail can't be deleted. I have to go through the whole program
of taking back-up etc. Which I have never tried. Hate it. I should just work.
Somebody says that microsoft made the problem by packing the whole winmail in
one file.

Install this fix:
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista

I don't know what they meant, but WinMail stores each message as a separate
EML file.

Thanks, I have Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 14. It's worked fine
for several months and due to your suggestion I turned it off and still tried
to send again, same problems. Do you know specifically if this system is NOT
compatible? I just don't want to uninstall it and purchase or download free
another system install it and then still have the same problems.

Also, to the best of my knowledge I do NOT have a stuck email. Unless it's
invisible :-) which I doubt. And anyway, I tried that "patch" to no avail.

Again, thank you so much for your input.

Trend Micro PC-cillin with its mail scanning turned off should be
fully compatible with Windows Mail. Did you use that antivirus
from day one? Most new PCs come with a trial edition of McAfee
or Norton, and even a brief exposure to those could have
corrupted your Windows Mail program.
Unfortunately, you can't uninstall/reinstall Windows Mail since it
is an integral part of the Vista OS.

Since there is no other fix to suggest, I recommend that you
upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Thank you again. Yes, I've always run Trend Micro, it came pre-installed on
my Dell computer.

Looks like I'm upgrading :-) Thanks so much for your help and wish me luck.

From your more recent post on the WLM newsgroup, it looks like
you may have run into a spot of trouble. :-(
