754 mobo and xp2500+ cpu?

Hi,
My current ageing PC seems to randomly freeze on me (been happening for the
last 3 months) causing havoc with lost work and so on. I have full AV,
anti-spyware, firewall etc and frequently check and clean the setup.

I am thinking it may be the Gigabyte mobo that is at fault (though I guess
it could be memory - 512Mb?), and have a 754 PC Chips K8 mobo to replace it.
Only thing is, I can't figure out whether it will be compatible with my
existing Athlon XP2500+

Any thoughts or guidance anyone, please. Would be much appreciated, thanks

The 754 is an old Athlon 64 socket it's not compatible with the Athlon XP.
I don't know if you can still get 754 Athlon 64s, they might be
still be selling Semprons (crippled A64s) in the 754 form factor. The
current AMD socket is socket AM2, they've stopped the production of the
939 pin A64s (which replaced the 940 pin and 754 pin A64s). The new socket
AM2 systems use DDR2 RAM, as does the new Intel Core2. Socket 754 used DDR
RAM which is the same as your old XP so you could move the RAM from your
old system to the new motherboard. However you suspect that you have a RAM
problem so saving the RAM might not matter. You should download Memtest86+
and test your RAM before you make any decisions. If you have a bad DIMM
then the cheapest thing to do would be to replace the DIMM. If your RAM is
OK then you could look at getting a Sempron. A Sempron system won't be any
faster then your current system but it would allow you to use your current
RAM, disks and graphics card. If socket 754 Semprons aren't available
anymore (check NewEgg to see if they have them) then you are looking at a
whole new system. Nothing in your current box is compatible with the
current generation of Intel and AMD systems. Current motherboards use SATA
for the drives, you have IDE, PCIe for the graphics, you have AGP, and
DDR2 for the DIMMs, you have DDR. If you get a new system then the Intel
Core2 is the processor of choice.

Could be a failing power supply, this is a common cause of random
freezing. Have you added any hardware in the past three months?

Memory failing can cause this. Test with memtest86:

http://www.memtest86.com/

and Prime95: http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

So can a failing power supply, motherboard, processor, hard drive,
just about any other component, and software problems.

Not compatable. One's Socket 462, the other Socket 754.

A good deal for the Socket 754:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 2.2GHz 512KB L2 Cache Socket 754 Processor

$53.00 USD, free shipping, will need a cooler.
Any thoughts or guidance anyone, please. Would be much appreciated, thanks

Might be time to build a new computer.

Check the PSU. Had the same thing happen when one of the fans on my PSU
froze up. As for the cpu, it won't fit on the 754 MB. The new 754 MB needs
a 754 Athlon 64 or 754 Sempron.

Thanks for your comprehensive answer - I hadn't realised just how much
things had moved on. I'll give your suggestions a try and see what if
anything can be salvaged. No wonder the PC Chips 754 mobo was so cheap![/QUOTE]

Right - sounds plausible - it was only a cheap unit that came with the
case - will try to replace. Thanks.#
