Just made a couple of fresh downloads of MS ASW, thought it would
be a new build 701, but I'm getting the old 615 w/ Dec-31 expiry. Is
the announcement ahead of the actual download ?

Yep. took me 2 hours till finally got the right build, as Bill Sanderson
said to me in the announcements area its more or less likely your ISP cache
servers or that are taking time to update. It did with me but its there so
give it time.

I haven't succeeded in getting that build off the download site myself. I'd
give it some time. There's a significant time needed to get the bits out to
all the servers involved, and I'm sure they allowed for that, but it isn't
there yet for many folks.

I've now tried from several different client sites and several different
ISPs--this is still a caching issue, but it is probably at Microsoft's end,
in my case, anyway.

In my case it's the unspoken rule of PC updates. Whatever day you pick
to update all your computers, as soon as you finish, a "New" release of
something will hit just as you get done.

I have just successfully downloaded it from http://www.majorgeeks.com/

Me too, smooth and easy, faster and clearer than from the official Microsoft
site, where it says you are getting the .701 and instead they are giving you
the old version, over and over again.
Will they ever learn how to be the best, why should we go somewhere else to
d/l a MS product?
It's unbelievable, innit?

I downloaded from the Microsoft site just now - I had just happened to have
opened the page to see if there was any announcement. Yet again it said
that existing users would "receive a software update" but there was no sign
of it appearing out of the ether - I did get the spyware definition update
yesterday so why was there no notification or automatic update?

I don't know when build .701 will appear via automatic updates. In my
experience, there is no manual way to get these automatic updates--doing
file, check for update doesn't bring in the new code--just new definitions.
