Since Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 are 32-bit operating systems, they can
support a maximum of 4GB of memory, or 0 to 4GB of addressing space. A new
36-bit physical addressing mode called PAE, Physical Address Extension,
allows physical memory greater than 4GB to be supported. PAE maps up to 64GB
memory into a 32-Bit (4GB) virtual address space. Additionally, each OS may
hard-code an address limit less than 64GB (e.g. 8GB in MS Windows 2000
Advanced Server).
To allow access above the 4GB address space (4GB to 32GB), Physical Address
Extension is enabled by adding the /PAE switch to the Windows 2000 boot.ini
file under the OS section. Here is an example of a line in the boot.ini file
with this switch enabled:
[operating system]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)/WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced
Server" /fastdetect /PAE
