66 Kb JPEG adds 800 Kb to the file size (Powerpoint 2000)

Hello,

I have an emptyish Powerpoint file, that is about 80 kilobytes in size.
After adding a jpeg file, 640x512 pixels, 66 kilobytes, the Powerpoint
files jumps to 880 kilobytes.

Is this normal? Is there a way around this, another format maybe? Or how
to "force" Powerpoint not to process the picture on it's own.

Now all the pictures add more than ten times their own kilobyte size to
the slideshow file size, leading to several megabytes, which is a bit
too much for our purposes...

An update: just noticed that this only happens if I use the "Doubleclick
to add an object" placeholder, not if I insert the picture without a
"placeholder".

So, a refined question: is there a way to have a nice "insert picture
from file here" placeholder? The clip art object placeholder doesn't
give a clean way to browse for a picture file from just any folder.
