Hi

Several dealers advertise with and AMD 64bit Sempron processor. Seems as
though, they consider the new socket 754 90nm Sempron a 64bit processor.
However, search on AMD's own website does not support this allegation...

Anyone here any the wiser?? Has AMD released a 64bit version of their
sempron cpu and not even bothered to announce it on their own website, not
to mention count it among their own list of the 64bit family!!!

The Sempron 3400+ also includes AMD64 support, and this feature has moved
down the Socket 754 line from the Sempron 3300+ to the Sempron 2600+. Both
64-bit and 32-bit Sempron models will be on the market simultaneously,
with the OPN number being the only way to differentiate the OEM models.
Sempron processors with the last two digits "BO" or "BX" means you have
found a 754-pin, 90nm, 64-bit enabled processor, while the retail packages
are labeled with 64-bit decals and will be much easier to find.

They are also hiding the 939 pin Semprons, which only go to system builders.

So... Is it a true 64bit cpu or does it simply support some features of the
true 64bit cpu's....

Can't get wise of that article...

Curious?

Why are they hiding them. I still have a 2800 Barton and have been putting
off an upgrade because I read an article a while back said the 754's were
basically dead and AMD would move everything to 939 so I have been waiting
on 939s to be priced more reasonable. Did I misunderstand?

The 939 Semprons were supposed to show up long ago, but they never have.
However, AMD aims to consolidate everything into the socket M2 next year, so
that should include the Semprons. Hopefully.

It's an Athlon 64 with a small l2 cache.

I just put together a free system for a friend in need using the
Sempron 64 2600+. It was cheaper by a few buck than the standard
Sempron 2600+.

Seem to work just fine with the minor exception that the MSI RS480M-IL
motherboard briefly complains that the CPU is "unknown" but other than
that treats it as a fully compatible processor.

AMD will be migrating to Socket M2 (940 Pins). Semproms will continue to be
available in both 754 and 939 pin variants, as answered earlier.

Socket M2 was decided upon due to the public demand for the dubious
advantage of dual channel memory support.

because they don't want you to know that 939 is just as dead as 754.
There's a new socket M2 with DDR2 support coming in early '06.

*ALL* Semprons shipping since July 2005 are 64 bit enabled.

Need good help? Provide all system info with question.

Public demand for DDR2? For AMD, with it's much more efficient
architecture, it makes little sense; users only gain about a 3 percent
increase in speed.

Note that DDR2 does have an advantage on the waning P4 architecture.
