By April or May next year i will have enough saved up to buy all the
bits and bobs for my next PC.

Is it worth me going for a 64 bit cpu and associated motherboard, or
stick with a 32 bit system?

I will want my new PC for games for entertainment, and I also intend
to learn 3D Studio Max for eventually doing 3D animation.

i think 64bit systems will look real good by then. i think right now the
sweet spot for price performance is 32bit at around 2500mhz, but that always
changes ;-).

The 64-bit systems will be blazing fast, but software is not there
yet.

Is software slow to come on to the market, or does it come in a rush
once the hardware is available? i.e. Windows XP for 64bit cpus is
available in beta form now, and Linux already has a full version
available, plus games like Halflife 2 and Doom 3 will be using
Hyper-Threading which 64 bit systems will probably use better then 32
bit systems?

I cant wait til adobe or avid or someone writes a 64bit version of their
software!

I currently run adobe premiere pro on a dual amd set up and it is
ridiculously fast compared to single cpu systems I have used it on in the
past, I generally do a major pc upgrade (new pc build) every 24 months, so
12 months time when I suspect the software will support 64 bit, you can
guarantee I'll build one!!

just thought you would all be dying to hear that!!!

As someone posted up the thread, a 64 bit processor doesn't buy you
much running 32 bit software. When a 64 bit OS is available, or at
least imminent, then I would buy a 64 bit processor. This is not yet
the case (at least for home PC use).

Yeah I guessed as much after reading the review on that url I was
sent. Ah well I guess I'll be getting the XP 3200 400mhz Barton I was
going to originally get after all, with a bit of luck the price will
have come right down by April-May. Pity AMD couldn't have released
the 64 bit cpu a year or so ago. :-(

Meanwhile, just figure the K8s as highend 32-bit cpus. They're still
good value. Lots of 32-bit muscle for $200-$400.

I haven't seen any benchmark for the $219 Athlon64 3000 yet, but
judging by $404 Athlon64 3200 and $317 AthlonXP 3200 comparisions on
32-bit, I'm not so sure highend 32-bit-only cpus makes much sense.
