I am building my own pc with a AMD 64 but CPU with
compatible motherboard. Now I see that no operating system
works with this kind of chip. Where can I buy a 64-bit
windows version at retail, without it being preinstalled
and without subscribing to the $2000 MSDN network? Why do
they not have this available for home users?

Greetings --

Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will be available only through OEMs that
offer Itanium-based hardware and available via the Microsoft
Developers Network (MSDN).

Windows XP 64-Bit Edition is ready for customers' applications
that benefit from large memory and/or fast computational performance.
Industry analysts recommend several key scenarios that benefit from
large amounts of memory and the overall high performance of the
architecture. For example:

a.. Mechanical Design and Analysis including Mechanical CAD,
Computer Aided Engineering and Solid Modeling
b.. Digital Content Creation including 3D animation, digital
video editing and composition and visual effects
c.. Scientific and high performance computing applications
such as oil & gas exploration, seismic analysis and advanced
simulations.

Not many home users have any need for it, apparently.

Buy Windows Server 2003 64 bit Edition. I have the 32 bit version
and it's like XP Pro only more secure and faster.
