Just curious if any of you have tried the 64 bit version of windows. What
are the pros and cons. The fact that there is no media player kinda sucks.
Are there 64 bit alternatives to the windows media player? I heard there
was no cd burner support as well, but that was supposed to be addressed and
may have been already. Please send thoughts.

I downloaded it a few days ago, so far I'm inpressed with the beta.

Only real gripes I have are ack of driver support from vendors (had to ditch my
soundcard for the onboard, losing 4 usb ports in the process) and that AVG
anti-virus wont run on it so the system is running unprotected.

Also some programs wont play nice with it but thats to be expected with betas
and jumps like this. If you plan on downloading it do it on a seperate partion
or harddrive, it is a prerelease so there are bound to be bugs in the system.

Hey thanks for the input. Just curious what hardware i.e. MB and video are
you running .... I didnt use a soundcard and the sound is pretty good. I
have the asus K8V deluxe and the radeon 9600. Is there windows media
player? If not how are you watching movies. The Virus protection program
thing you mentioned is kinda uncool. I wonder if pc-cillin works.

anyone else have comments to share on the win 64 os?

I'm running the K8V, AMD 64 3200+, 1gig (2x512) corsair twinx 3200LL. The
onboard sound sounds decent but I miss my 5.1 (admitiatly I havent had a chance
to play with my speakers, logitech 690z). I'll have to reboot to get in to xp64
to check on the media player thing so I'll get back to ya on it. Unfortnatly
yeah the AV situation kinda bites, I know my copy of Windows Server 2003 had
the same situation. But hey at least ICQ and AIM run on it ;)

I watch a lot of movies I download so if the media player is dead I dont
think it is worth my time. I want to see the 64 bit in action though. Are
there really any redeeming qualities that you think are a must see?

Anandtech did a review of the prerelease and came up with an overall increase
of 10-15% if I remember correctly. Only area it lagged in was gaming, and thats
expected to be caused by the crappy drivers from Oct from nivida. Sorry I
havent had a chance to swap over to XP64 and let you know about the media
player, it involves swapping harddrives and just havent had a chance to open up
the ol case ;) Tho can anyone else answer about if XP64 has a media player?

same here I am debating on getting a test HD to play around with the 64
capabilities. Wish the hardware and the soft were released more in sync.
Thanks for your input...
