64 bit version - How can I be sure?

I've just had to reinstall RC1 after it crashed on rebooting after I'd
removed the uGuru driver Vista didn't like. Now I find that 1 of my dual AMD
processors is more or less stopped at 1 MHz while the other is at 2.6GHz.

I used the same DVD to reinstal and I'm pretty sure I selected the same
version (Home Premium). How can I be sure I still have a 64 bit version? The
version number is 6.0.5600. I thought I should check that 1st before
searching elsewhere for my lost power. 12 cylinder engine, only running on 6.

If you have a PC with multiple physical CPUs that is, two or more chips
installed
on the motherboard you'll need Windows Vista Business, Enterprise, or
Ultimate
to take advantage of both CPUs.
If you install Vista Home Basic or Home Premium, the OS will only
recognize one CPU.
That's similar to the way Windows XP works today. If have a dual-CPU
machine,
you need to install XP Professional to use both CPUs.

So what about dual-core CPUs?
That's different. All Vista versions, even the lowly Home Basic,
support multiple cores on a single chip, with no additional
configuration required.

I am not sure if "winver" will tell you, but it might. Click on the Start
Orb, type "winver" and press Enter.

Another way is, x64 edition includes a separate IE7 64-bit visible in the
Start Menu. Also, x64 will have two "Program Files" directories on the
system drive, one specifically marked for 32-bit applications.

Harald - It's a dual-core Opteron, not 2 seperate chips. Thanks a lot. I
didn't know that about the different versions.
Mark - and I should have realised that having 2 different program file
folders could only mean I have a 64 bit version.
Seems I'll have to install one of the folders Harald suggested.
I clearly need to wake up a bit! Ta! Colin

Okey, what I read in your first post suggested othervise ;-)
Now I find that 1 of my dual AMD processors is more or less stopped at

So that's what I thought you had, a dual CPU system, not dual core.

btw:
did you find out if it was 32/64 bit you installed ?

Yes harald, when I started this thread it was 32 bit version, that's why inly
1 core was running. Now I'm on 64 bit and both are working fine. Colin

Cool Colin, I'm glad its working OK for you now.

but me thinks ... both cores should be running on 32 bit as well ...

Re my earlier statement :
"All Vista versions, even the lowly Home Basic, support multiple cores

Unless I'm mistaken, that is the same for both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Can someone, who *knows*, correct me if I'm wrong ?

Hello,
You are correct. Multiple Cores should be seen on the Windows Vista Home
Skus.
Two CPU sockets would require Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista
Enterprise or Windows Vista Ultimate to see the second physical processor..
