602 PC Suite vs. OpenOffice

OpenOffice is much more similar to MS Office, has all the apps, most of the
options, and a LOT of dictionaries, and 602 PCSuite is much smaller, and has
that 15% of possibilities of MS Office that people actually use.

Last time I tried them both out, I found that 602suite felt
more like MSOffice, but OpenOffice was better at saving files
to MSOffice formats. While both open MSOffice files just
fine, neither one saves flawlessly to that format every time.
So either one can be a good choice to replace MSOffice UNLESS
you need to send MSOffice files to an MSOffice user.

Is the freeware version of 602 PC Suite crippled? The web
site appears to be silent on the differences, if any,
between the freeware and payware versions.

IIRC, the payware version offers support and comes with
templates.

I tried 602 a while back, and IIRC there were missing features such as spell
checking (or real-time spell checking) that were missing. I clearly recall
that 602 had a couple of features missing that were a major annoyance to me,
but YMMV. I liked the GUI and "feel" of the program better than OOo, but not
enough to overcome the missing features.

My experience with 602 was that, when I uninstalled, my Registry remained full
of lines that associated it with various file types, so that when I double
clicked I got a message that I couldn't open the file that way. It took a while
to straighten out all the associations.

Some of the very advanced features in 602photo are, in your words, crippled,
meaning they can't be used in the free version. I haven't noticed anything in
602TAB ( which is the equal to Excell) and I use TAB charts and everyting. But
what do you want for free. I suspect once 602 becomes widly known they will
pull the plug on the free version.

The "free" version comes with the obligation to register. If you don't,
the spell check is disable and it will stop working after a certain time
.. (30 days i presume). But you will also need to activate your copy.
So you will need to register everytime you: reinstall the application;
install the application in other computers or operating systems (if you
have dual boot for ex. - Windows 98/2000/XP); or reinstall the operating
system.

The same thing all over again, and again and again.
It's bad in the freeware form, but take pity of the poor souls that fot
this kind of treatment.

So This garbage is: resgisterware, activationware, crippleware,
liteware, and goodbyeware for me.

Thanks. Now I know not to bother with it.
 
Personally, I see nothing wrong with registerware. It seems a fair trade
off for a superior product that otherwise costs me nothing. I have a
netscape.com email account that I use for registering registerware. I go in
there once a month or so to see if anything interesting got sent there and
to delete the posts. I use registerware all the time. Heck, a Netscape
email account is registerware, when you think about it.

I couldn't agree more. If someone wants to give me a valuable free tool
and only requires that I receive the occasional e-mail, jeez, that's not
too much to ask, is it?

Which is not to say I don't blast 'developers' who offer stuff just to
harvest your e-mail.
