5840 did not fix my modem BSOD on boot!

Well, the problem that started in 5728 is still here in 5840. Still get a
blue screen on boot if modem is enabled. Bad_Pool_Call error or something
close to that.

Well, when you take into consideration build 5840 was not publicly released
or even available to Technical Testers, I am not surprised you are having
problems with it. I suggest, trying build 5744 or wait on the RTM trial.

It would most likely be that the manufacturer for your modem is dragging
their feet on getting the driver out there. Or they have a driver that is
just fouled. Not a lot anyone can do till they get their stuff straight

The last "public" release of Vista was 5744.

If you are having problems with 5840, you may want to try the Warez site or
torrent host you got it from.

With Interim builds, Microsoft has always said not everything may function
normally.

What type of modem is it anyways?

1) Exactly what have you done to get the latest driver for the modem?

2) Have you changed the modem driver at all since the last build where it
was working?

3) What's the modem make and model and which driver are you using and which
driver worked last?

4) Have they in fact any updated drives since the last one that worked?

As to all the yadayada it wasn't released how long will it take to chissel
through to people that Beta Builds are largely sales tools for MSFT and they
have zero concern for them as pirate problems or as torrent deliveries. For
MSFT getting Beta builds on boxes is very much like the guy who says " No
publicity is bad publicity and I don't care what you say about me as long as
you spell my name right."

The more Vista betas they can get on boxes the better for them--the more
exposure. It's like a bill board. MSFT still tries to get advertising real
estate on OEM desktops and sometimes gets outbid by Google. It happened
with Dell.

Once again, the comment was just that, a comment only. There was no
complaint, or request for help. Many device makers will not put out the
effort to write new drivers for older devices. In at least some cases, the
built in ones for Vista don't seem to work correctly, so I appear to be
stuck with 2 devices that will not be totally useable in Vista.

The only reason I went to 5840 was to check to see if they fixed the modem
or soundcard problem--they have not. They broke the modem in 5728 (worked
in 5600) and it is still broken. The modem drivers from the manufacturer
did not change, Vista did. Oh, and Andre, if it was broken in 5728, it
doesn't seem realistic to recommend going back to 5744, which is my main
testing platform----

Once again, this is information only and for the benefit of anyone using
devices that might be having problems. I have also advised other
manufacturers of problems I have encountered, so hopefully they will have a
better product when and if they release new drivers.

Clark--

My response was to help not to be "critical." I've been there. Lots of us
have who have enjoyed drilling the Beta and adding new hardware.

To clarify further and help you find the right driver certainly not to be
critical, but I'm coming from similar experiences in adding hardware and I
recently added a very similar Video Card and of course had to add a PSU to
run it (thanks OEMs who ship the lowerst end power supplies possible and
often make them very proprietary--I'm talking to Dell for one but many of
them do this).

1) Your observation on device makers is prescient, on point, and correct. I
don't know how I can change this. We had considerable dialogue in Beta
chats with the non-intuitvely named team members who control devices on
Vista as to interaction they had with device makers and also urging them to
fix Device Manager so it can even tell you whether a driver is working
correctly--it doesn't; it won't in Vista; they admitted it to me, Device
Manager RTM'd with Stones music on August 25, 1995. Does that sound like
enough time for you for MSFT to have gotten their arrogant act together and
fixed it?

2) As I think you appreciate if you can get them you are much better off
going to the Device Manufaturer to find the driver that works best. In the
case of these Nvidia chipsets where companies make the cards for Nvidia and
in the 7600 one of the major if not largest companies that does this whose
name is on the boxes is BFG Technologies.

As I said they have uniquely great Tech Support and they can discerningly
tell you which drivers are working with the newer cards all the way up to
the newest one 7050 and soon the 8000 series released next week or
thereabouts.

Anyone me included would applaud your efforts to interact with device
manufacturers but I can tell you that drivers for that card that work can be
found..

I know with many of the ATI and some of the NVidia particularly with X64
that right now that can be a bumpy road, but I am confident that while it's
over due that they get out, soon things will be much better.

Again some of the problems come from Vista having new builds, and the driver
manufacturers putting out multiple choices of drivers for a card, and
without some experienced information with them--the Tech Support for your
card does have that; some of the forums for the cards but you know that, an
end user faced with a choice of multiple drivers for new cards and Vista or
a new card to their box and Vista doesn't have precise information to choose
among the drivers that won't "lock up" or othewise give Safe Mode dimension
resolutions--we have that complaint on an ATI high end card on this group
now.

Any efforts you are making to interact with the device makers to make the
situation better as to choice and driver quality and appropriatness so it
will work with given cards we can only applaud.

This is all just an exercise for me at the present time. I will not
continue to use a Vista Beta or purchase Vista when it comes out. Maybe if
I replace my present computer, I will think about it then, but at least a
year after the release sounds about right. My sole motivation is to help
make Vista a better product, and the beta testing program seems to allow me
to do that.

I really feel my modem boot problem might be an indicator of something that
could effect more than just modems, but I have done all I can. I am not a
programmer, so I may be off base, but it seems really strange that a device
will work fine when the system is up, but will not allow a normal boot if
enabled. Hopefully when Vista is released to the public, the sound cards,
modems, NICs and whatever, will work or can be made to work with available
drivers, or if they don't, it really won't be Microsoft's fault.
